About The Team
The Linux Systems Administration (LSA) team manages and operates the Linux infrastructure powering Intermedia's production services across multiple on-premises and cloud data centers.
Our team is distributed across the US and EMEA, working collaboratively on infrastructure automation, platform lifecycle management, monitoring, and incident response.
You'll work alongside experienced Linux Systems Administrators and DevOps Engineers who value automation, Infrastructure as Code, thorough documentation, and continuous improvement.
What You'll Do
Linux Infrastructure
- Provision, configure, monitor, and decommission Debian-based virtual machines across Hyper-V, VMware ESXi, and OLVM environments using Cinc (Chef) and Ansible automation.
- Perform routine Linux system administration, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
- Participate in operating system upgrades and lifecycle management.
Configuration Management
- Develop, review, and maintain Cinc (Chef) cookbooks, Ansible playbooks, roles, data bags, and environments.
- Improve infrastructure automation and configuration consistency.
Monitoring & Observability
- Onboard servers into internal monitoring systems and Grafana.
- Configure SNMP-based monitoring and alerting.
- Investigate monitoring alerts and assist in resolving operational issues.
- Participate in production monitoring during scheduled shifts.
Platform Operations
Assist In Operating Shared Infrastructure Services, Including
- RabbitMQ
- Elasticsearch
- Graylog
- Grafana
- Postfix mail relay clusters
- BIND DNS servers
- Sentry
Security & Patch Management
- Apply operating system and security updates through CI/CD pipelines and unattended upgrades.
- Maintain firewall configurations (iptables, IP sets, F5 LTM/GTM).
- Assist with TLS certificate lifecycle management using DigiCert and internal Certificate Authorities.
Incident Response
- Participate in production incident response, disaster recovery activities, and post-incident reviews.
- Help identify root causes and contribute to long-term operational improvements.
Documentation
- Maintain runbooks, operational documentation, knowledge base articles, and SaaS GRID documentation in Confluence.
Infrastructure Projects
Participate In Infrastructure Modernization Initiatives, Including
- Hypervisor migrations (VMware ESXi and Hyper-V to OLVM)
- Debian major-version upgrades
- Legacy platform migrations
- Data center consolidation and decommissioning
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 1–4 years of hands-on Linux systems administration experience (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
- Solid understanding of Linux fundamentals, including:
- systemd
- networking (VLANs, DNS, NTP)
- filesystems
- user and group management
- LDAP authentication
- Experience with at least one configuration management platform (Ansible or Chef/Cinc).
- Familiarity with virtualization platforms such as Hyper-V, VMware ESXi, or KVM/OLVM.
- Basic Bash scripting skills and the ability to understand and modify existing Python scripts.
- Understanding of web servers and reverse proxies, particularly Nginx.
- Basic knowledge of TLS/SSL certificate management.
- Experience using Git for source control and code reviews.
- Ability to work in production environments while following change management procedures.
- Good written English skills for documentation and collaboration across distributed teams.
Even Better If You Have
- Experience administering RabbitMQ, Elasticsearch, or Graylog.
- Familiarity with Postfix mail relay configuration.
- Experience with F5 LTM/GTM or A10 load balancers.
- Knowledge of monitoring tools such as Grafana, Telegraf, and SNMP.
- Exposure to Docker and containerized workloads.
- Familiarity with Percona MySQL and XtraBackup.
- Experience with TeamCity or similar CI/CD platforms.
- Experience with NetBox or other IPAM/DCIM solutions.
- Knowledge of enterprise backup solutions such as Veeam or NetBackup.
- Familiarity with Test Kitchen and Dokken for local Chef cookbook testing.
