About the Role

We are looking for a Senior PHP Backend Engineer to join a growing engineering team in Athens and contribute to the development, maintenance, and evolution of large-scale web platforms and business-critical applications.

This role is ideal for experienced PHP developers who have built production-grade applications using either Symfony or Laravel and enjoy working in a modern engineering environment focused on quality, scalability, and long-term product development.

You will collaborate closely with developers, product teams, and stakeholders while contributing to high-impact projects using modern PHP technologies and best development practices.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Develop, maintain, and enhance backend applications using PHP 8+
• Design and implement scalable REST APIs and backend services
• Build and optimize database structures, queries, and application performance
• Participate in code reviews and contribute to engineering best practices
• Write and maintain automated tests
• Collaborate with product, QA, and engineering teams
• Troubleshoot production issues and improve system stability

Contribute to technical discussions and architecture improvements

Requirements

• 4+ years of professional PHP development experience
• Strong experience with PHP 8.x
• Strong commercial experience with Symfony OR Laravel
• Experience building and maintaining REST APIs
• Solid knowledge of MySQL and database optimization
• Experience with Git and Docker
• Familiarity with automated testing (PHPUnit, Pest, or similar)
• Good understanding of software design principles and clean code practices
• Ability to work independently while collaborating within a team environment

Fluent English communication skills

• Experience with both Symfony and Laravel
• Doctrine ORM or Eloquent ORM
• OAuth2 / SSO integrations
• Payment gateway integrations (Stripe or similar)
• Webhooks and event-driven architectures
• Experience with cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure)
• Experience with SaaS platforms or multi-tenant systems

Experience integrating with enterprise systems

• Athens-based position
• Initial onboarding period on-site in Athens
• Hybrid working model thereafter (3 days per week on-site)

Long-term collaboration with a minimum engagement of one year
