Structural Engineer – Underground Infrastructure

Istanbul or Ankara, Türkiye

Shape a future with purpose at Arup in Istanbul or Ankara.

Arup's purpose, shared values, and collaborative approach have set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world. We guide, plan and design the future of the built environment.

We are a global consultancy with extensive technical and advisory expertise. Our underground infrastructure team focuses on the structural design of tunnels, stations, and underground structures, working across railway, metro, and high-speed rail projects in Türkiye and internationally.

The Opportunity

We are growing our underground infrastructure design team in Türkiye; this is a strategic hire that offers a genuine opportunity to help shape the capabilities of our infrastructure practice. You will gain exposure to railway, metro, high-speed rail, underground station and cut-and-cover projects, with direct connection to Arup's global structural, bridges, and civil structures communities, an environment with real space for technical excellence and digital innovation. This role is open to candidates based in either Istanbul or Ankara; our priority is finding the best person for the role.

As a Structural Engineer – Underground Infrastructure at Arup, you will:

  • Deliver structural design packages for complex underground infrastructure projects taking technical ownership of allocated elements including stations, cut-and-cover structures, and heavy civil works, working closely with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams to develop integrated, high-quality engineering solutions.
  • Perform advanced structural and numerical analyses producing calculations, drawings, specifications, and clear technical reports for underground and heavy civil structures across all design stages, applying industry-standard structural software with accuracy and rigour.
  • Manage allocated work packages across multiple projects and proposals ensuring technical quality, consistency, and timely delivery, and co-ordinating with other disciplines and project managers throughout.
  • Support, mentor, and technically guide junior colleagues contributing to a collaborative, inclusive team culture and supporting the growth of Arup's underground infrastructure structural design capability in Türkiye.
  • Contribute to technical excellence and digital innovation actively participating in knowledge sharing within Arup's global structural, bridges, and civil structures community, and bringing curiosity and initiative to the application of digital tools and advanced modelling in your work.

Does this role inspire you?

We are looking for someone who brings a combination of the following. If you don't meet every single point but believe you'd thrive in this role, we'd still love to hear from you.

  • Academic background: Master's degree in Structural Engineering or a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional qualification and experience. PhD-level candidates with relevant experience are also welcome to apply.
  • Structural design experience: Around 3+ years in structural design, with ideal experience in metro, high-speed rail, railway, underground stations, cut-and-cover, or heavy civil structural design. Candidates with strong structural skills from multidisciplinary building or data centre projects may also be considered and upskilled into infrastructure.
  • Software proficiency: Proficiency in one or more structural analysis and design software packages such as SAP2000, ETABS, Strand7, MIDAS, or similar. SOFiSTiK knowledge is an advantage.
  • Digital mindset and delivery focus: Interest in digital tools, advanced modelling, scripting, or AI is a strong advantage. You manage your own workload effectively, deliver to quality and programme expectations, and collaborate actively with others rather than working in isolation.
  • Communication: Strong professional proficiency in English (written and spoken); Turkish language skills are required for this role.
