Backend engineer - NodeJS / Rust

Paris, France - hybridHybridFull time

Apply on Gem

👉
This role is based in Paris as the whole team is here, 3 days / week at the office.
👉
You don't have to match 100% of the requirements. If you believe you're a strong fit, we'd love to hear from you.
🌟
We just raised $35M in Series A, if you join Tsuga you will experience a strong growth.
About The Role & The Team
You will join the “central team” composed of 4 senior engineers, all reporting directly to Louis and working hand in hand with every other engineering and product team.

This team is one of the heaviest users of Tsuga internally, giving engineers first-hand insight into product improvements and customer pain points.

We move fast and ship to prod several times a day. We lean hard on AI, but not blindly: our problems are hard and can’t be AI-slopped away. That’s why we maintain a high bar on reviews and why you’ll learn a lot here.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build critical features: Design and ship features end-to-end that solve real customer problems and hold up gracefully as complexity grows.
  • Own the platform: Solve issues throughout our entire stack, build what you’d want to use in the product
  • Push our AI frontier: Partner with Data Science to build the systems that let AI agents retrieve the right data, act through our APIs, and troubleshoot incidents autonomously.
  • Collaborate broadly: Work shoulder-to-shoulder with Product, Frontend, and Storage, and jump into cross-functional task forces as priorities shift.

Technical stack

  • Typescript, NodeJS, PostgreSQL, AWS ECS/Lambda for workloads running in our cloud
  • Rust, Helm, Kubernetes for the workloads running in our customer’s cloud
  • Terraform/Pulumi to manage our infra

About You & What We Are Looking For

  • Experience:
  • You have 3+ years building software, ideally in early-stage or high-growth environments where you've constantly traded off quality against velocity.
  • Prior exposure to distributed systems or the observability industry.
  • Builder's mindset: Starting from a blank page doesn't scare you. You lean on your colleagues' knowledge to move faster, and you default to working out loud and collaboratively.
  • Customer-obsessed: We dogfood Tsuga every day, so you care how the product is actually used and want to contribute ideas.
  • Pragmatic problem solver: You enjoy ambiguous, undefined problems and reach for the simplest solution that actually works.
  • Communication: You're comfortable working in English every day: Tsuga spans the US, the Middle East, and Europe.
  • Range over specialty: You happily get your hands dirty across the whole product and codebase, and you'd rather own a problem end-to-end than stay boxed into one layer.
  • Bonus: Experience in NodeJS and Rust is much appreciated

Perks & benefits

  • Lunch vouchers (Swile)
  • Health insurance (Alan)
  • Unlimited snacks at the office
  • Referral allocation 5k€
  • Meaningful equity
  • Quarterly team offsite in France - the whole company, every quarter
  • Parental leave: fully paid parental leave policy, 32 additional company-funded days for the non-birthing parent with flexible usage options
  • Remote friendly: we have a lot of full remote workers and for others based in the Paris office, we expect them to come 3 days per week at the office

Working at Tsuga

  • 🔥 We move fast. As an early-stage startup, we are pragmatic, we value ownership, and quick feedback over unnecessary process and hierarchy.
  • 🙏 We solve problems, not blame people. When something goes wrong, we fix it, learn from it, and improve the system.
  • 🛠️ We are builders. We start everything from a blank page and we lean on your colleagues' knowledge to move faster.
  • 🙇 We are customer-obsessed. We dogfood Tsuga every day, so you care how the product is actually used and want to contribute ideas.
  • 💥 We lean hard on AI, but not blindly. Our problems are hard and can’t be AI-slopped away.
  • 🌍 We're international from day one. Every quarter, the whole team meets at our French office to align on company goals, celebrate wins, and connect with teammates from the US, UK, the Middle East, and across Europe.

Описание вакансии

At Bending Spoons, we’re striving to build one of the all-time great companies. A company that serves a huge number of customers. A company where team members grow to their full potential. A company that functions at unparalleled levels of effectiveness and efficiency. A company that creates value for shareowners at an extraordinary rate. And a company that does so while adhering to high ethical standards.

In pursuit of this objective, we acquire and improve digital businesses, not to sell on, but to own and operate for the long term. The transformations we make are often deep—designed to speed up innovation, benefit customers, and strengthen business performance. Here, hierarchy is minimal and teams are small and talent-dense. We operate established products with the ambition, agility, and urgency of a startup. Across the company, we integrate AI deeply into how we work so that human judgment and machine intelligence reinforce each other.

For a talented, driven, and collaborative individual, working at Bending Spoons is an opportunity to learn, make an impact, and progress their career at an exceptionally high rate. That’s our promise to such a candidate.

A few examples of your responsibilities

  • Build software that matters.
Take real ownership from idea to production, creating systems used by millions and evolving them into products at scale.
  • Amplify your impact with AI.
Integrate the most powerful AI tools directly into your development workflow—design, implementation, testing, and documentation—to move faster while maintaining high standards for correctness, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Master your toolkit.
Work across diverse stacks with end-to-end ownership, choosing the right technologies for each challenge. From monoliths to microservices, gRPC to REST, Kubernetes to Docker, Python to Rust—you’ll apply technologies thoughtfully, focusing on depth and purpose rather than trends.
  • Simplify relentlessly.
Question every layer of complexity. Improve architectures, pipelines, and codebases to build systems that are simpler, more scalable, and easier to maintain.

What we look for

  • Reasoning ability.
Given the necessary knowledge, you can solve complex problems. You think from first principles, and structure your ideas sharply. You resist the influence of biases. You identify and take care of the details that matter.
  • Drive.
You’re extremely ambitious in everything you do—and your initiative, effort, and tenacity match the intensity of your ambition. You feel deeply responsible for your work. You hold yourself to a high—and rising—bar.
  • Team spirit.
You give generously and without the expectation of receiving in return. You support the best idea, not your idea. You're always happy to get your hands dirty to help your team. You’re reliable, honest, and transparent.
  • Proficiency in English.
You read, write, and speak proficiently in English.

What we offer

  • Incredibly talented, entrepreneurial teams.
You’ll work in small, result-oriented, autonomous teams alongside some of the brightest people in your field.
  • An exceptional opportunity for growth.
We go to great lengths to hire individuals of outstanding potential—then, our priority is to put them in the ideal position to thrive. Spooners in their 20s lead products worth hundreds of millions of dollars. And if you’ve got what it takes, you’ll soon be playing an essential role in major projects, too.
  • All. These. Benefits.
Flexible hours, remote working, unlimited backing for learning and training, top-of-the-market health insurance, a rich relocation package, generous parental support, and a yearly retreat to a stunning location. We help each Spooner set up the conditions to do their best work.
  • A flexible start date and part-time options.
You don't need to wait until graduation to apply. We offer flexible start dates and the possibility to begin part-time, transitioning to full-time as you complete your degree. Many Spooners joined before graduating and progressively took on greater responsibility, with arrangements that allowed them to do so without compromising their education.
  • Competitive pay and access to company equity at a discount.
Typical annual salary offers range from £85,797 to £151,436 in London and from €66,065 to €107,837 elsewhere in Europe. The lower end of these ranges applies to candidates with little or no relevant experience, while exceptionally experienced candidates may receive offers of up to £316,052 in London or €240,330 elsewhere in Europe. Candidates offered a permanent contract may choose to receive part of their compensation in discounted company equity.

Commitment & contract
Permanent or fixed-term. Full-time.

Location
Milan (Italy), Madrid (Spain), Warsaw (Poland), London (UK), or fully remote from eligible countries.

The selection process
In our screening process, we prioritize verifiable signals of excellence, regardless of seniority. There are no preferential paths beyond what your application demonstrates, and we evaluate every candidate through the same process.

Some people hold back because they feel they lack experience or have an “imperfect” CV. If you like the role and believe you could excel over time, don’t self-reject.

All applications go through our careers page, which is the only way to be considered. If you pass our screening, you’ll be asked to complete one or more tests. They are challenging, may involve unfamiliar problems, and can take several hours. To learn more about what to expect throughout the selection process, you can find additional information here.

We set the bar high and won’t extend an offer until we’re confident we’ve found the right candidate. This is why a job may remain open for months or be reposted several times.

We consider all applicants for employment and provide reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities—please let us know through this form.

Before you apply
If you’ve applied before but didn't receive an offer, we recommend waiting at least one year before applying again.

Bending Spoons is a demanding environment. We’re extremely ambitious and we hold ourselves—and one another—to a high standard. While this tends to lead to extraordinary learning, achievement, and career growth, it also requires significant commitment.

To help you ramp up quickly and set yourself up for success, we expect you to spend most days in our Milan office during your first few months with us, regardless of your long-term work location. It’s the best way to rapidly absorb our company culture and build trust with your new teammates. We’ll support you with generous travel and accommodation assistance. After that, you’re welcome to work from one of our offices, or remotely from approved countries—depending on what we agree at the offer stage.

If the role speaks to you and you’re excited to give your best, we’d love to hear from you. Apply now—we can’t wait to meet you.

Our mission is to become the new standard for tracking time - integrated with every project software worldwide.

How We Work
We are an international team with a hybrid remote work culture and a headquarters office in Munich. Our Product
With our software for automatic activity tracking, we are the technology leader in our segment:

  • Our software automatically records what your are working on (e.g. emails, documents, websites etc.) - so you can easily remember on which customers/projects you spent your time

  • As part of the Quality Assurance Team, you will be directly involved in testing our core product —the Memtime App— as well as our cloud services, integrations, website, and internal tools.
  • We are also expanding our product portfolio to smaller companies and freelancers with a new cloud-based product, where high-quality testing and automation will play a vital role.

What We Are Looking For In You

  • Experienced QA Engineer with a strong background in software testing and automation for SaaS products.
  • Several years of professional experience in QA roles.
  • Proficient in testing methodologies, including manual testing, automated testing, and integration testing.

  • Skilled at identifying and documenting bugs, edge cases, and improvement opportunities.

Technical Skills

  • Experience with Electron-based applications.
  • Familiarity with end-to-end testing tools (e.g., Playwright, TestCafe).
  • Experience with test automation tools (e.g., Selenium, Playwright, Cypress, etc.).

You Will Be

  • Testing the functionality of our core product and integrations.
  • Writing, maintaining, and improving test automation scripts.
  • Ensuring that all new features and bug fixes are properly tested before deployment.
  • Identifying and reporting bugs and collaborating with developers to resolve them.

  • Helping to define the architecture and workflow for automated testing.

Job Details

  • Fully remote
  • Full-time (40h/week)
  • Hardware will be provided to you (Mac and Windows)

Interview process
Please upload your CV (PDF file) in the application form (Cover letter optional).

If your submission meets our expectations, we invite you to a first meeting to get to know each other (Company, position etc.)

Next step is a Questionnaire to fill out.

If that was successful, we will invite you to a single 1.5-hour interview split into 2 parts:

  • Technical interview
  • Your questions

If you pass the interview, we will make you an offer afterwards.

Why you should apply
Memtime is in an exciting stage of growth.

We are still a relatively small team, so your work will have a big impact from day one.
