We are looking for a
Data Engineer/ Data Modeler
to support the design and implementation of a modern Azure-based data platform. The ideal candidate combines strong hands-on data engineering skills with the ability to work closely with business stakeholders, structure unclear requirements, and translate them into scalable data models. The role is especially suitable for someone with experience in Azure Synapse, Azure Data Factory, Python/ PySpark, SQL, SAP source systems, data warehousing, and Power BI reporting enablement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze and clarify business requirements from scattered or incomplete documentation
  • Work directly with business departments to align requirements, data definitions, and reporting needs
  • Translate business requirements into conceptual, logical, and physical data models
  • Design and implement data models for: Silver layer: normalized / 3NF model; Gold layer: dimensional / star schema model
  • Build and maintain medallion architecture in Azure Synapse, including silver and gold tables
  • Develop data transformations and pipelines using Azure Synapse, Azure Data Factory, SQL, Python/ PySpark
  • Integrate data mainly from SAP source systems
  • Support data cataloging, governance, and lineage through Microsoft Purview
  • Use Azure DevOps for repository management, CI/CD, and project tracking
  • Enable reporting and analytics through well-structured datasets for Power BI

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Strong experience with Azure cloud data platforms
  • Hands-on experience with: Azure Synapse, Azure Data Factory, Python/ PySpark, SQL, Data Lake/ Lakehouse architectures
  • Solid understanding of data modeling: 3NF / normalized models, Star schema/ dimensional modeling, Data warehouse design
  • Experience working with SAP source systems
  • Ability to translate business requirements into technical data models
  • Experience with Git-based development and CI/CD, ideally in Azure DevOps
  • Good understanding of reporting needs, ideally with Power BI
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with both business and technical stakeholders

A significant advantage would be

  • Experience with Microsoft Purview
  • Experience in enterprise reporting, forecasting, or analytics platforms
  • Background in SAP-heavy enterprise environments
  • Experience with agile delivery and tools such as Jira/ Azure DevOps
  • Microsoft data engineering certification is a plus

Our Data, AI, Solutions & Engineering team really likes helping our clients solve their complex problems with data, by implementing controls and governance of data, creating actionable insights, embedding machine learning solutions or building data platforms. We bring the right team and skills on the table and can offer deep expertise across Data Strategy, Data Science & Engineering, Data Visualisation, Data Management, Data Architecture and Software Development.

What you will be doing

You will be using your experience to help our clients solve their most important data challenges. You would be also responsible to support the growth of our team, helping them to build the skills they need to solve our client’s challenges.

Typical Engagements Include

  • Defining and implementing on premise or cloud architectures, for example, a cloud data warehouse, data lake or a data platform to enable digital transformation
  • Working with clients in more traditional areas of data engineering such as, data warehousing, building operational ETL/ELT data pipelines across a number of sources, and constructing relational and dimensional data models
  • Performing maturity assessments across clients’ data capabilities and recommending improvements
  • Building technology blueprints and advising clients on the different technology options
  • Translating business requirements (both functional and non-functional) into solutions, ensuring compliance with the organisations strategy, policies and standards and in some cases, help customers to define new policies, principles and standards
  • Helping clients to identify risks and mitigations for their complex data programmes, as well as transition to modern cloud-based infrastructures (AWS, Azure, GCP) by leveraging related architecture patterns (e.g., APIs, events)
  • Working with clients in key areas of data governance, such as in defining principles including, but not limited to Master Data Management, Data Lineage and Data Security

Below we list some of the skills we are looking for. Of course, do not expect you to be an expert in all areas and we understand that experiences vary based on the background and years of experience:

  • Passionate individual who is excited by problems with data and can bring a good mix of technical delivery and core consulting skills in client engagements
  • Ability to design and maintain robust data pipelines and architectures on modern delivery frameworks to meet functional business requirements
  • Experience in using cloud technologies such as AWS or GCP or Azure, as well as big data platforms (e.g., Spark, Hive, Databricks)
  • Working knowledge of relational databases and NoSQL database technologies.
  • Ability to understand and design CI/CD pipelines
  • Competent in SQL and or at least one modern programming language, such a Python
  • Experience with BI visualisation tools would be beneficial, but not required
  • Be a ‘lifelong learner’ and can demonstrate a drive to always be learning and developing your skillsets
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree across any discipline. A master’s degree in a technical discipline (computer science, engineering or another STEM discipline) would be helpful but is not essential for success
  • Candidates should be comfortable with international travel, which may be required for up to 30% of the time. Candidates must be able to travel and work within the EU/UK.

Job Responsibilities

  • Architect and build database schema, data ingestion models, ETLs, and testing to uphold data integrity and availability
  • Develop, maintain, and optimize current data architecture and pipelines, while maintaining documentation
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to junior team members through training, pair programming, and code reviews
  • Collaborate with product, research, operations, and front-end teams to build innovative solutions to achieve business goals
  • Perform analysis on large aggregated (e.g. demographic, geographic, GIS / spatial) datasets
  • Work directly with a development team in California and other offshore development team members in various time zones
  • Able to overlap with US West coast 3 – 4 hours to handle hand-over discussions, triage issues, etc.

Candidate Profile

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science / Engineering or comparable experience
  • Excellent programming skills with minimum 5 years of experience in Python (e.g. Pandas, SQLAlchemy, Flask, FastAPI, etc.)
  • Extensive database skills with minimum 5 years of experience in either MySQL, SQL, or PostgreSQL
  • Proficiency with Git is required; previous experience with the Atlassian product family (Confluence and Jira) is a plus
  • Must enjoy collaborative problem solving, have excellent communication skills, and demonstrate attention to detail
  • Prepared to work independently in a fast-paced, agile environment with the ability to multitask
  • Track record of keeping up with new cloud technologies, languages, standards, and practices
  • Prior knowledge of finance, real estate data, mathematics, or GIS / spatial data is a plus
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a remote team

Knowledge & Skills

  • Excellent Python Programming knowledge
  • Excellent scripting skills and an extensive knowledge of SQL with ability to write advanced queries to manipulate datasets
  • Knowledge of and passion for database design, optimization techniques, and warehousing
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to quickly learn, internalize complex pipelines, and efficiently troubleshoot bugs
  • Experience with AWS infrastructure and CI / CD, and interest in front end technologies is a plus
  • Prior experience developing scalable APIs (REST and GraphQL) is a plus

Compensation, Benefits And Work Authorization
In addition to a base salary, this position is eligible for a performance bonus and benefits (subject to eligibility requirements). Total compensation is based on several factors including, but not limited to, type of position, location, education level, work experience, and certifications. This information is applicable for all full-time positions.

The Team
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Database Platform Engineer to join a team of highly skilled Engineers and DBAs who are responsible for managing the Oracle, PostgreSQL, MongoDB and SQL Server database estate.

The team are responsible for the day-to-day support and administration of the Oracle, MongoDB, SQL Server and PostgreSQL database estate including engineering and all database related projects. The role involves working closely with other Infrastructure teams as well as developers and end users.

This role also offers the opportunity to work on exciting technologies like Docker, Kubernetes and exposure to other DevOps aligned methods of automation, real time monitoring and metrics collections using latest Open-Source toolsets; Grafana and InfluxDB etc.

Role Responsibilities

  • Administer and manage the Oracle, PostgreSQL, MongoDB and SQL Server database estate.
  • Collaborate with other technology teams to identify and implement optimal solutions for Man Group.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn new technologies in this area.
  • Ensure the rollout of a standards-based estate using relevant configuration management tools.
  • Plan capacity for physical and virtual database servers.
  • Ensuring high availability of the infrastructure and minimising the duration and impact of any outages.
  • Maintain a consistently high level of service delivery for incidents, requests, and changes.
  • Provide database support and advice to Infrastructure teams, developers, and end users.
  • Uphold database security standards across the database estate.
  • Participate in an on-call support rota.

Key Competencies
Required

  • Deep knowledge of Oracle or PostgreSQL RDBMS.
  • Foundational knowledge of MongoDB or SQL Server.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure automation and configuration management tooling such as Terraform and Ansible.
  • Proficiency in Linux.
  • Strong scripting skills (preferably Bash, PL/SQL, Python, Powershell).
  • Experience of designing, building, configuring Data-Guard, RMAN.
  • Ability to diagnose and tune performance across the entire stack (Database internals, OS, Storage, Networks).
  • Proven ability to automate builds and repetitive tasks.
  • Flexibility to broaden and develop skills in any area as required.
  • Strong prioritization and project management skills.

  • Experience with Docker containerization.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies.
