The Role

You’ll design, build, and iterate on Areg.ai’s visual navigation system for GPS-denied solar plant environments. This is a hands-on, full-cycle role spanning computer vision, robotics, visual localization, map matching, algorithm evaluation, and production integration. You’ll use camera input and pre-built maps - orthomosaics, site maps, or 3D maps - to estimate position and orientation and support reliable navigation without GPS.

You’ll work closely with AI, backend, product, and field operations teams to create a scalable navigation platform for drones, robots, and inspection workflows across utility-scale solar plants.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and implement visual localization and navigation pipelines using camera input and pre-built maps, without relying on GPS.
  • Build robust map-matching against orthomosaics, drone imagery, site maps, and 3D or digital twin representations of solar plants.
  • Develop algorithms for visual odometry, SLAM/VIO, feature matching, image retrieval, pose estimation, and relocalization.
  • Integrate camera-based localization with path planning, inspection workflows, and real-world operational constraints.
  • Establish evaluation and QA frameworks to measure localization accuracy, robustness, latency, and failure modes.
  • Build data collection, annotation, simulation, and field-testing workflows for real-world solar plant environments.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with AI engineers, backend engineers, field operators, and product managers.
  • Continuously monitor and improve system performance, including edge-device constraints, scalability, and reliability.

You’re a Great Fit If You Have

  • BSc / MSc / PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a similar field.
  • Strong Python and/or C++ skills with hands-on experience building computer vision, robotics, or perception systems.
  • Experience with visual localization, visual odometry, SLAM, VIO, structure-from-motion, or map-based relocalization.
  • Familiarity with geospatial data, orthomosaics, coordinate systems, image registration, and map alignment.
  • Experience with OpenCV and tools such as ROS, COLMAP, OpenSfM, ORB-SLAM, RTAB-Map, or similar.
  • Strong understanding of algorithm evaluation, error analysis, data collection, and real-world testing workflows.
  • Excellent communication skills, curiosity, and rigor around reliability, determinism, safety, and failure handling.

Nice to Have

  • Understanding of camera geometry, calibration, epipolar geometry, homography, PnP, feature matching, and bundle adjustment.
  • Knowledge of solar energy systems, drone or robot inspection workflows, IoT telemetry, or O&M operations.
  • Experience with GPS-denied navigation, sensor fusion with IMU/odometry, or localization under weak/no GNSS conditions.
  • Experience with real-time deployment on edge devices, embedded GPUs, or resource-constrained hardware.
  • Familiarity with photogrammetry, 3D reconstruction, LiDAR, NeRF/Gaussian Splatting, or map generation workflows.
