This is us
At Avenga, we believe that human creativity empowers technology that matters. Operating globally, our 6000+ specialists provide a full spectrum of services, including business and tech advisory, enterprise solutions, CX, UX and Ul design, managed services, product development, and software development.

This is the job
We are looking for an
AI/ML Engineer
to design, develop, and deliver a Proof-of-Concept (PoC) system for validating the use of
Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS)
data and other signal processing time-series data for detection of intrusions in critical infrastructure, enabling timely intervention.

You will validate the feasibility of using machine learning techniques on signal processing time-series data for object detection (specifically vessel detection using vessel noises – engine, propeller, hull-wave interaction, vibration patterns). You will conduct literature analysis, adapt and train machine learning models (Computer Vision, Vision Transformers, or similar), and integrate them with DAS data.

This is you

  • Experience validating the feasibility of using machine learning techniques on signal processing time-series data for object detection
  • Experience conducting literature analysis and research in applied ML
  • Experience training and fine-tuning deep learning models for image classification and feature extraction
  • Expert-level proficiency in PyTorch
  • Experience with specialized vision transformers like DINO (v2/v3) and deep learning vision models
  • Extensive experience with MLFlow for artifact and metric tracking (Precision/Recall, ROC curves)
  • Hands-on experience with Vertex AI model deployments, Cloud Run and high-performance ML model serving
  • Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Workstations and Vertex AI Workbench Notebooks based development flow
  • Strong skills in PostgreSQL/PostGIS and H3 for spatial data association
  • Experience with Signal Processing and time-series data
  • A working knowledge about Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) or seismic data processing is preferred
  • Proficiency in Python (version 3.11/3.12+), using modern package managers like uv
  • ML leadership experience (not just agents/LLMs) – ability to review the business problem, set designs, and drive technical decisions

This is your role

  • Validate the feasibility of using ML techniques on signal processing time-series data for object detection
  • Conduct literature analysis and research
  • Adapt, train, and integrate machine learning models (CV, Vision Transformers) to analyze time-series data for object detection
  • Design and execute experiments to iterate toward accurate detection models
  • Document experiments and use insights to define production-ready solutions
  • Collaborate with data engineers, domain experts, and other ML engineers
  • Ensure model reliability, performance, and observability in production environments
  • Contribute to architectural decisions, code reviews, and engineering best practices

At Avenga, everyone matters. We provide equal opportunities in recruitment, career development, and leadership, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, religion, or any other characteristic. We are committed to fostering a work environment where our diverse community of employees, candidates, and business partners actively shapes our growth. By bringing together people from different backgrounds and experiences, we build a workplace where everyone feels free to be themselves while honoring the boundaries of others.

Join Proton and build a better internet where privacy is the default
At Proton, we believe that privacy is a fundamental human right and the cornerstone of democracy. Since our inception in 2014, founded by a team of scientists from CERN, we have dedicated ourselves to providing free and open-source technology to millions worldwide, ensuring access to privacy, security, and freedom online.

Our journey began with Proton Mail, the largest secure email service globally, and has since expanded to include Proton VPN, Proton Calendar, Proton Drive, and Proton Pass. These tools empower individuals and organizations to take control of their personal data, break away from Big Tech’s invasive practices, and defeat censorship. Our work impacts hundreds of millions of lives, from activists on the front lines defending freedom to leaders in governments protecting sensitive information. In some cases, Proton’s services have even been instrumental in saving lives by enabling secure and private communications in high-risk situations.

Proton is a profitable company that does not rely upon VC funding, supporting over 100 million user accounts with a growing team of over 500 people from over 50 different countries, from the world's top companies and universities. We value intelligence, learning potential, and ambition in our hiring process. Adaptability is key as we navigate uncharted territories and redefine how business is conducted online.

Hiring at Proton is highly selective, with less than 1% of candidates hired. We believe smaller teams of exceptional talent will always prevail over larger teams with lower talent density. You will have the opportunity work with many of the world's top minds in their fields, ranging from former international math and science olympiad winners to chess champions.

We have a global mindset and big ambitions but remain a start-up at heart. We value empowerment and flexibility and keep our structure flat to keep moving fast and avoid unnecessary politics. Tired of blending into the crowd? Join us and do work you can truly be proud of. Check our

Purpose of the role
The MSA department is a highly multi-disciplinary group started in 2019 to tackle difficult mail delivery, spam and abuse problems. We built sophisticated systems from scratch that combine human intelligence and machine learning to make tens of millions of realtime or asynchronous decisions each day. As of 2022, our three areas of focus are 1) mail delivery and spam, 2) abuse and account security, and 3) site reliability of Proton. Over the past years, our custom systems have reduced spam filter misclassifications by over 50%, blocked millions of abusive bulk signups, protected hundreds of thousands of users from account compromise by attackers, and mitigated hundreds of DDoS attacks. In order to move fast with limited resources, we are organized into autonomous teams responsible for the whole system, with expertise across infrastructure, data storage, backend, frontend, machine learning, security and operational excellence. In 3 years, we grew from 2 engineers to over 30 engineers and analysts, spread across 3 continents for 24/7 coverage. We are looking for humble, mission-driven, systems-thinking people who want to make a big impact in a startup environment.

What You Will Do

  • Monitoring how things are working in production and taking appropriate actions across all MSA systems
  • Fight spam and abuse by quickly understanding the data and context and creating rules to act on past or future events
  • Give insights and feedback to Software and Machine Learning Engineers to help design and improve our systems.
  • As an engineering-driven organization, MSA currently doesn't have product or project managers, so you will have the opportunity to play those roles and drive the planning, development, and QA process.
  • Our more technical analysts develop Python scripts for more sophisticated actions or data analysis

Job Requirements

  • Experience performing data analysis (preferable but not limited to electronic communications, anomaly detection or fraud prevention)
  • Strong logical reasoning and analytical skills
  • Excellent English communication, both written and spoken
  • Able to operate in a fast environment
  • Skopje Work Schedule: second shift (2:00 PM – 10:00 PM CEST) with flexible schedule
  • Taipei Work Schedule: standard day shift

Bonus points for:

  • Experience with Python

Even if you don’t meet all the requirements listed above, but feel you could still be a great fit, please still apply.

What We Offer:

  • Work that Matters: millions of people trust Proton with their privacy. We answer only to our users — not advertisers, not investors with conflicting agendas, not governments. The work you do here is real, and the impact is measurable. (read more about our impact here)
  • Technology: you'll get the right hardware and the right software you need to do your best work.
  • Learning & Development: we invest in your growth because sharp people make us better. Proton is one of the fastest ways to accelerate your career because you'll be thrown into real challenges, with real ownership, from day one.
  • Employee Benefits: your wellbeing isn't an afterthought. We offer strong health coverage, solid retirement options, generous leave, and wellness support so you can bring your best self to work every day
  • Stock Options: at Proton, we all have the opportunity to be owners of the company. From day one, you have a real stake in what we're building. When Proton wins, you win.
  • In-Person Collaboration: Amazing things happen when passionate, smart, and purposeful people get together in the same room. With offices across Geneva, Zürich, Barcelona, London and more, you'll spend most of your time collaborating face-to-face with people who genuinely care about what they're building
  • Food: Lunch and snacks are on us every day in our offices so you can focus on the work and not on what's for lunch.
  • Transport: getting to the office shouldn't cost you. We cover public transport, bike allowances, or parking, whichever works for you.
  • Flexible Working: you own your schedule. Set hours that work for you and your team — because outcomes matter more than when the clock says you started.

Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
At Proton, we believe diversity drives innovation and strengthens our mission to provide privacy as a default for all. We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all individuals, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, physical ability, or socio-economic background, feel valued and empowered. We strive to create equal opportunities, promote open dialogue, and support continuous learning to ensure every voice is heard and respected.

If you need any extra support or reasonable adjustments during the hiring process, please let your talent partner know.
