The Role
As our Senior Backend & Infrastructure Engineer, you will own the foundation our healthcare application runs on while actively contributing to the core product. Your mission is to harden our systems, improve observability, and make decisions that ensure our architecture is robust and maintainable. You will sit at the intersection of DevOps and feature development, ensuring our stack (Node.js, TypeScript, Docker, Cloudflare) is secure, robust, and well architected. This requires a blend of deep operational knowledge and sharp software engineering skills.
What You'll Do
- Infrastructure improvement:
Take ownership of our deployment and CI pipeline and make them simpler, more robust, and more maintainable. (Maybe move our Cloud Run setup to a VPS?) - Backend Development:
Write, review, and maintain production-ready backend application code in TypeScript. - Security & Access Control:
Conduct deep security reviews, assisted by LLMs. Reason critically about our authentication, login, and access patterns and execute on opportunities for improvements in our infrastructure and apps. - Observability & Reliability:
Set up excellent, clean observability pipelines to monitor system health and integrity and alert on relevant anomalies.
Who You Are
- End-to-end production experience:
You’ve worked with production systems where you’ve “seen it before”, ideally in small-to-medium scale setups. - Security-minded:
You naturally think defensively. You care deeply about data privacy, secure default configurations, and protecting user information. - Driven by reasoning:
You can reason clearly about system architecture, security trade-offs, and failure modes. Your intuition for what makes a system robust is tuned by years of hands-on experience. You strongly prefer to build systems that are easy to reason about. - High Agency:
You manifest determination to make things happen, sustained over long periods of time, and make thoughtful decisions in the face of uncertain trade-offs. - Technically skilled:
You understand and can work with a broad range of technologies: networking, DNS, Linux environments, containers, practical cryptography, Node.js, TypeScript, relational databases, HTTP, and CI pipelines. You use LLMs and modern tools to accelerate your work without abdicating responsibility for the results.
Bonus Points
- Computer Science or Engineering degree.
- Deep familiarity with Cloudflare's ecosystem and network-level security.
- Prior experience dealing with data compliance (e.g. GDPR or equivalent frameworks).
- Previous experience at an early-stage startup.
