Описание вакансии

At Navan, our mission is to power the in-person connections that move people, ideas, and businesses forward. We help travelers focus on being there, not getting there. Our engineering organization plays a critical role in delivering seamless, reliable, and intelligent experiences across travel and expense management at global scale.

We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our Expense Platform team in Berlin. In this role, you will lead the design and evolution of distributed systems that power the full expense lifecycle — from expense creation and approvals to reimbursements and financial reconciliation. You will partner closely with engineering leaders, product managers, designers, and cross-functional stakeholders to drive technical strategy, platform scalability, and engineering excellence across the organization.

As a senior technical leader, you will influence architecture decisions, mentor engineers, improve developer productivity, and help shape the future of Navan’s expense platform as we continue to scale globally.

What You’ll Do

  • Architect, build, and scale backend microservices using Java and Spring Boot
  • Lead the design of event-driven systems leveraging Kafka, AWS SQS, and distributed messaging patterns
  • Drive technical strategy and long-term platform architecture decisions
  • Design and develop high-performance REST APIs and integrations with external financial and payment systems
  • Own critical expense workflows including reimbursements, cash advances, mileage, per diem, and approvals
  • Improve receipt ingestion, OCR processing pipelines, and automation capabilities
  • Ensure platform reliability, scalability, observability, and operational excellence
  • Champion engineering best practices including testing, CI/CD, code quality, and incident management
  • Mentor and guide engineers across teams through technical leadership and design reviews
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product, operations, and finance teams to deliver impactful solutions
  • Identify opportunities to improve engineering velocity, system resilience, and developer experience

What We’re Looking For

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant backend and distributed systems expertise
  • Strong experience building scalable systems using Java, Spring Boot, and microservices architecture
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems, asynchronous processing, and event-driven architectures
  • Strong experience with Kafka, AWS SQS, or similar messaging technologies
  • Expertise in relational databases and data modeling (MySQL or PostgreSQL)
  • Experience designing and operating cloud-native applications on AWS
  • Proven track record leading large technical initiatives and influencing engineering direction
  • Strong understanding of system reliability, observability, performance optimization, and scalability
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and modern software delivery practices
  • Ability to mentor engineers and drive technical excellence across teams
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Passion for building platforms that enable speed, innovation, and exceptional customer experiences

THE ROLE & THE TEAM

Data is a critical pillar of our product development process, and the Product Analytics team serves as the chief advocate for its quality, consistency, and strategic usage.

We are seeking a data-driven and user-centric professional to drive the strategy, evaluation, and optimization of our digital products. In this role, you will define how we value user interactions, measure success, and tie product features directly to overarching business outcomes.

WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)

  • Drive the implementation and evolution of a standardized cross-organizational product performance measurement framework, eliminating metric fragmentation by establishing consistent core KPIs (such as Weekly Active Users, Conversion Rate, and the Overall Evaluation Criterion) across all business units.
  • Own the technical architecture and attribution models for user value scoring, developing complex data structures to quantify and weigh both upper-funnel engagement actions (e.g., browsing, saving, content interaction) and lower-funnel transactional behaviors.
  • Advance the content flywheel into a measurable insight engine that definitively proves how content experiences translate into long-term financial, visit frequency, and business value.
  • Lead the engineering of advanced data solutions and complex analytics pipelines, including session-level tracking, cross-premise identity stitching, and methodologies to mitigate the "Winner’s Curse" in product experiments.
  • Design, align, and analyze rigorous high-stakes experimentation, including A/B tests and quasi-experiments designed to drive sustainable growth across diverse business models.
  • Democratize insights and act as a strategic advisor to Senior Leadership Team, Product Managers and Applied Scientists.

WE’D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF

  • You have 7+ years of experience in product analytics, ideally within a large-scale e-commerce, or product-led environment.
  • You possess a strong analytical and technical background, with high proficiency in SQL and deep experience using Python or R for advanced analytics and building scalable data pipelines.
  • You are an expert in A/B testing frameworks, user behavior analytics, experiment design, and managing complex attribution or scoring systems.
  • You bring a dual understanding of funnel performance, mapping upper-funnel engagement metrics (views, watch time, retention) to lower-funnel transactional performance (conversion rate, contribution margin impact).
  • You have hands-on experience applying advanced causal inference methodologies (such as Propensity Score Matching, Difference-in-Differences, or Synthetic Controls) when randomized controlled trials are unfeasible.
  • You have proven leadership capability to excel in highly ambiguous environments, shift organizational models, and lead through influence to align senior executives.
  • You are a master storyteller with data, confident in communicating complex technical frameworks into simple, actionable strategic recommendations.
  • You have experience working with modern data visualization and analytics tools to scale data-driven accountability.

OUR OFFER

Zalando provides a range of benefits, here’s an overview of what you can expect. Ask your Talent Acquisition Partner to learn more about what we offer.

  • 27 days of holiday a year to start for full-time employees (+1 day for every calendar year up to 30 days)

  • Family support, including counselling and dedicated services for parents and carers
  • Company pension scheme
  • Employee shares programme
  • Health and wellbeing options, including Wellhub
  • Mental health support and coaching
  • Development through our training platform and biannual peer-to-peer review
  • 2 paid volunteering days a year

INCLUSIVE BY DESIGN

If you think you have what it takes, we encourage you to apply even if you don't meet every single requirement. You may just be the right candidate for this or other roles!

We are committed to providing an exceptional and accessible candidate experience for everyone. If you require any accommodations to support you throughout the hiring process, please let us know – we are here to assist you.
