About The Role
The Principal DevOps Engineer II at IDEXX plays a pivotal role in shaping and maintaining the infrastructure that supports VetConnect PLUS, a comprehensive platform providing veterinary practices with a unified view of diagnostic results. This role involves leading technical initiatives related to cloud infrastructure management, automation, and observability, primarily within AWS and GCP environments. The engineer will embed with product teams to ensure seamless deployment, operation, and scaling of software solutions while fostering a culture of operational excellence and continuous improvement. Additionally, the successful candidate will lead the DXSE DevOps Squad, mentoring senior engineers, setting standards for DevOps practices, and influencing organizational DevOps strategies. This position offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of technology, healthcare, and animal welfare, contributing to solutions that impact veterinary medicine worldwide.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience designing, deploying, and maintaining complex application stacks, preferably in Java Spring environments
- Proficiency in coding and scripting languages such as Python, PHP, JSON, Perl, or Ruby
- Strong background in Linux/Unix system administration
- Experience with cloud platforms, particularly AWS and GCP
- Hands-on experience building, deploying, and configuring full application stacks
- Experience with automation tools and creating repeatable deployment templates
- Knowledge of SQL and MySQL; familiarity with NoSQL databases is a plus
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues in development, testing, and production environments
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills across functional teams
- Ability to re-engineer and optimize existing systems and processes
- Financial acumen to balance cost and technical requirements
- Preferred: Experience with open source technologies and IT operations best practices in high-availability environments
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with software application and engineering teams to deploy, operate, and optimize systems supporting VetConnect PLUS
- Lead technical initiatives related to cloud infrastructure management, automation, and observability
- Develop and maintain infrastructure as code for AWS and GCP environments
- Build and enhance tools for deployment, monitoring, and operational efficiency
- Automate operational processes to improve reliability and scalability
- Mentor and lead the DXSE DevOps Squad, fostering best practices and continuous learning
- Drive technical decision-making and solve complex operational challenges
- Participate in capacity planning, performance tuning, and incident response activities
- Promote a culture of operational ownership among development and testing teams
- Stay current with emerging technologies and industry best practices in DevOps and cloud computing
