Edge Platform Engineer

FELFEL Switzerland

Zurichfulltime

Apply on the employer's site

Role description

IN SHORT

Are you ready to own the edge runtime for thousands of smart fridges and coffee machines across Switzerland and the US? As our new
Edge Platform Engineer
(100%) in Zurich, you will join a close-knit 8-person engineering team to rebuild and manage the systems that power our hardware. In this hybrid role, you will take full ownership of our edge domain from day one, ensuring that our unglamorous but highly reliable hardware works seamlessly for real people getting their lunch every day.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Take full, end-to-end ownership of the edge runtime on our smart fridges and Gavetti coffee machine controllers, managing everything from zero-touch provisioning, device bootstrap, call-home and on-device applications.
  • Drive the consolidation of our fleet management onto a single, reliable platform (such as Azure IoT Hub or KubeEdge), taking charge of making and defending the architectural choices.
  • Streamline the technology stack by reducing the number of languages running on the edge, bringing the device world closer to our cloud environment.
  • Collaborate closely with and report directly to the Head of Engineering to specify the next generation of hardware, select vendors, and define software contracts.
  • Inherit and manage crucial vendor relationships and integrations, including those for our vendors and various badge reader suppliers.
  • Ensure the team maintains a grounded, honest understanding of what is actually running and performing in the field.

YOUR PROFILE

  • Solid background with roughly 5+ years of experience building and operating production systems, specifically managing a real fleet of devices with live users, outages, and OTA updates.
  • Proficiency in at least two of the following languages: C#, Go, or Kotlin, coupled with a willingness to consolidate and standardize our tech stack.
  • Working knowledge of edge platform networking (VPNs, NAT, flaky links, office networks), running Linux and Android on small hardware, OS-level debugging, and observability for offline-tolerant systems.
  • Strong ability to treat hardware as an interface, including practical experience with Modbus, USB, serial connections, reading sensor datasheets, and working with vendor SDKs.
  • Familiarity with tools like Balena, Azure IoT Hub, KubeEdge, Kubernetes, Docker, or experience in commercial appliance ecosystems is a strong plus.
  • Pragmatic problem-solving mindset with a track record of putting the problem before the programming language, preferring standard, reliable tools over inventing custom solutions.
  • Fluency in English, German is nice to have
  • Non-smoker - we don't want you to smell like cigarettes, neither at work nor at customer meetings. After all, FELFEL is about good food.
  • Valid work permit or Swiss passport.

OUR BENEFITS

  • Lots of delicious food, just a few steps away from your desk - we make your gastronomic dreams come true
  • Best barista coffee and tea for the whole team, thanks to our innovative Gavetti coffee machine
  • 5 weeks holiday per year, as well as the chance to buy an extra week of vacation
  • Two full weeks of ‘work from anywhere’ per year to bring more variety to your work day
  • We care about your future with an above-mandatory pension fund
  • New parents get 16 or 3 weeks, respectively, of fully paid parental leave. We also support the return to work by making a generous financial contribution to childcare until the child reaches kindergarten age.
  • We encourage our employees to use public transport by covering your half-fare travelcard
  • Great team events, such as our well-known FELFEL Summer Outing
  • Stay active and healthy with our weekly sports sessions

Does this sound like the job for you? We can't wait to learn more about you! APPLY NOW with your complete documents in either German or English.
