About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Machine Learning Scientist to join our innovative research team at Bayer. In this pivotal role, you will lead the development, evaluation, and application of cutting-edge machine learning models aimed at advancing biomedicine. Your expertise will drive the design of virtual cellular and patient models, integrating multi-scale and multimodal biological data to support drug discovery, target identification, biomarker discovery, and patient stratification. You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams including biologists, chemists, data scientists, and external partners to accelerate research initiatives and bring transformative solutions to life. This position offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of biomedical research through the application of advanced AI and machine learning techniques, contributing to Bayer’s mission of improving global health outcomes.
Qualifications
- PhD in Computational Chemistry, Biology, Bioinformatics, Chemical/Biomedical Engineering, or a related field at the intersection of Life Sciences and Computer Science
- Extensive industry experience in machine learning applications within biomedical research
- Deep expertise in modern machine learning methods such as sequence-to-function models, generative models, and multimodal fusion techniques
- Proven experience with biological datasets including Single-Cell, Spatial-Omics, Bulk-Transcriptomics, Proteomics, and Imaging data
- Strong programming skills in Python, with experience in PyTorch, pandas, scikit-learn, and collaborative software development best practices
- Knowledge of bioinformatics tools, DNA/RNA biology, and agent-based AI workflows
- Excellent scientific rigor, analytical thinking, and problem-solving capabilities
- Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, with excellent communication skills
- Leadership experience in research initiatives and cross-functional team collaboration
Responsibilities
- Lead the development and implementation of advanced machine learning models for biomolecular design, target discovery, and patient stratification
- Evaluate and apply foundation models such as protein/RNA language models, single-cell models, and multimodal generative architectures
- Create virtual cell and patient models integrating multi-scale biological data to simulate cellular states and support in-silico patient stratification
- Identify opportunities to accelerate drug discovery projects through innovative AI solutions
- Engage and communicate with internal and external stakeholders, including biologists, chemists, data scientists, R&D leadership, and academic partners
- Stay updated on the latest developments in foundation models, virtual modeling, and related fields, presenting insights internally and externally
- Lead initiatives to embed AI technologies into biomedical research workflows and foster knowledge sharing within the team and with external collaborators
- Contribute to strategic planning and decision-making for AI-driven research projects
