We are building a modern, scalable cloud data platform to power analytics, reporting, and advanced data-driven decision-making across our organization. As a Senior Data Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in designing and operating this platform — leading architecture, implementing best practices, ensuring data quality and governance, and driving continuous improvement. Your work will directly impact how the organization leverages data to deliver value.

What You’ll Own — Key Responsibilities & Impact

  • Design and implement data fabric architecture across heterogeneous data sources and platforms.
  • Develop scalable ETL/ELT pipelines for batch and real-time data integration.
  • Integrate structured and unstructured data from databases, APIs, SaaS applications, data lakes, and enterprise systems.
  • Implement metadata management, data cataloging, lineage, and data discovery capabilities.
  • Build data-access and integration services using APIs, event streaming, and distributed processing.
  • Establish data quality, validation, observability, and monitoring frameworks.
  • Implement data governance, security, access controls, and compliance requirements.
  • Work with cloud technologies such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Optimize data pipelines and processing workloads for performance, scalability, and cost.

Who You Are — Required & Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience as a data engineer (or similar), with significant exposure to cloud-based data platforms and modern data architectures.
  • Strong understanding and practical experience with data modeling, data warehousing / lakehouse architecture (e.g. dimensional modeling, star/snowflake schemas, Delta Lake / Lakehouse).
  • Proven track record in data governance, metadata management, and ensuring data quality at scale.
  • Solid experience in performance optimization and troubleshooting of data processing jobs / pipelines (Spark/Databricks).
  • Excellent programming and query skills — strong SQL, Python (or another relevant language); ability to write clean, efficient, maintainable code.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to think at both micro (pipeline/job level) and macro (architecture/strategy) levels.
  • Excellent communication skills: able to explain complex technical issues to non-technical stakeholders, collaborate across teams, and influence architectural decisions.
  • Self-motivated, responsible, and capable of working independently and as a technical leader in a structured data platform environment.

Role description

My responsibilities:

The BI Developer (Backend) at ALDI designs, builds, and maintains robust, scalable data pipelines and backend analytics components that transform raw data into trusted, well-modelled, and high-quality datasets. Enables downstream reporting, dashboards, and analytical use cases by partnering with product teams, data owners, and stakeholders to ensure accurate, performant, and well-documented data products.

Key responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain data pipelines (batch/near-real-time) to support reporting and analytics
  • Develop and optimise ETL (Extract Transform Load) jobs and data transformations
  • Model data for analytics (e.g., dimensional/relational models) and support consistent metrics definitions
  • Develop and maintain reporting assets (dashboards, scheduled reports, KPI definitions)
  • Write production-quality SQL and implement performance improvements (query tuning, indexing/partitioning strategies where applicable)
  • Ensure data quality through validation checks, anomaly detection (as applicable), and reconciliations
  • Provide monitoring, alerting, and troubleshooting for pipeline/report failures
  • Document datasets, transformations, metric logic, data lineage, and known limitations
  • Support governance needs: permissions, dataset certification workflows (if applicable), and auditability

The knowledge I own:

  • Strong SQL (joins/aggregations/window functions, data integrity and performance awareness)
  • Experience building data pipelines using ETL patterns (or equivalent orchestration)
  • Proficiency with Python or R
  • Familiarity with cloud based data solutions (Databricks, Snowflake, etc.)
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD concepts and automated deployment workflows
  • Understanding of data quality principles and how to implement validation (row counts, referential integrity, range checks, reconciliation)
  • Production engineering mindset: monitoring, incident response, and maintainable code/process
  • Analytical and structured approach to work
  • Passion for delivering high-quality user experiences
  • Ability to work independently while being a strong team player
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken)
  • Understanding of Agile practices and iterative development processes is a plus
  • Basic statistical thinking for validating results (e.g., distribution checks, sanity checks, trend validation) is advantageous

Job Description

Data Solution Design and Development:

  • Design, develop, and implement complex and scalable data solutions on the AWS cloud platform.
  • Design, build, and optimize data pipelines to ensure efficiency and reliability.

Programming & Scripting:

  • Write clean, efficient, and maintainable SQL and Python code.
  • Develop and maintain shell scripts to support automation.

DevOps & Automation:

  • Utilize Docker containers for containerizing applications and data pipelines.

Cloud Data Services:

Qualifications

Requirements
Programming & Scripting

  • Must have Proficiency in both SQL and at least one imperative programming language, particularly in Python, emphasizing clean, efficient, and maintainable code.
  • Experience with shell scripting.

Devops & Automation:

  • Familiarity with Docker and at least one CI/CD tool (e.g., Github Actions, GitLab CI/CD) to streamline deployment and manage data pipelines.

Cloud Data Services

  • A minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in data engineering, with a strong focus on cloud-based solutions.
  • Has delivered at least one complex and scalable data solution on at least one cloud platform’s data services (Primary AWS data engineering skills required, GCP/Azure experience beneficial.)
  • Experience in working with dbt or SQLMesh is a plus.

Soft And Other Skills

  • Strong team player with a proactive mindset, eager to take on challenges and drive solutions.
  • Great problem-solving skills, analytical thinking, and a structured approach to decision-making.
