Role description

Description

QuantumDiamonds is building commercial quantum sensing tools for semiconductor inspection and failure analysis. As our
Quantum Sensing Engineer (NV Centers)
, you will join the Hardware Pre-Development Team and take technical ownership of the sensing core of our widefield Quantum Diamond Microscope (QDM).

At the heart of your role is one question:
how do we get more performance out of the NV sensing system?
You will work across the complete sensing chain — from the diamond sensor and laser excitation through microwave spin control and bias magnetics to fluorescence collection and camera readout. When sensitivity, resolution, speed, or stability falls short, you will investigate the system end to end, identify the limiting mechanism, and turn your findings into measurable improvements.

The diamond sensor itself is an important part of that challenge. Together with internal experts and external partners, you will help drive the development of our NV diamond material — connecting epitaxy, irradiation, annealing, surface preparation, and optical coatings to the performance we ultimately achieve at the system level.

This is a hands-on R&D role spanning quantum physics, experimental hardware, and sensor development. You will take ideas from first principles through experiments and prototypes to validated technologies that can be transferred into our products.

Who we are

Founded in 2022 as a spin-off of TU Munich, QD leverages quantum sensors to rapidly capture three-dimensional current maps within multi-layer chips. Our strong, international team of over 70, including physicists, engineers, data scientists, and other experts, works side by side with major semiconductor manufacturers, supporting chip debugging and accelerating yield analysis. Backed by top-tier deep tech investors, semiconductor experts, and strategic public programs, we have ensured long-term stability, shifting from breakthrough to scale - and shaping the next chapter in chip testing.

Why join us?

Picture this:

  • Quantum sensors that see
    inside
the most advanced chips on Earth, right where two frontier fields collide.
  • Nobel-Prize physics aimed at real customers with real problems, in production now, not someday.
  • Physicists, data scientists, and engineers building side by side, turning deep science into tools the industry actually runs on.
  • An international team that runs at hard problems for fun, where knowledge moves fast and so do you.

Still unsure about why joining us?

  • You'll get to build a company together with a brilliant and welcoming team on a product that has never been done before.
  • From Day 1, you'll own your own topics end to end and see the direct impact of your work on how the world sees QuantumDiamonds.
  • Our technology is the cutting edge of tomorrow, starting today and not in 10 years.
  • You’ll be part of a high-growth company backed by top-tier investors.

Let’s make the invisible visible!

What will you do

  • Own the end-to-end NV sensing chain of the QDM, from laser excitation and diamond sensor through microwave spin control and bias field to fluorescence collection and camera readout.
  • Develop and benchmark measurement protocols (e.g., ODMR variants, pulsed sequences, lock-in and referencing schemes) that improve sensitivity, speed, and robustness.
  • Prototype hardware improvements across microwave delivery, photon collection, bias magnetics, and timing, and validate every concept hands-on in the lab.
  • Steer our diamond sensor R&D, providing technical direction to our diamond material/process experts and driving recipe optimizations for NV-layer epitaxy, irradiation and annealing, surface preparation, and optical coatings towards our system-level performance goals.
  • Define diamond specifications, characterize new material generations (NV density, contrast, coherence, strain), and correlate material parameters with system performance.
  • Collaborate across hardware and software, document your findings, and hand over validated technologies to our Product Development Team.

What is expected of you

  • A degree in Physics, Quantum Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field, typically with a PhD or equivalent hands-on experience with NV centers or a closely related quantum sensing platform.
  • Deep understanding of NV physics: ODMR, optical spin polarization and readout, and magnetometry protocols, and how they set practical sensitivity limits.
  • Systems-level thinking and solid working knowledge of the optics and electronics around a quantum sensing experiment: you troubleshoot across domain boundaries down to the root cause.
  • A working understanding of how diamond growth, doping, irradiation, annealing, and coatings shape NV properties, or the drive to build this expertise fast.
  • The ability to steer recipe development with partners: defining specifications, designing characterization campaigns, and turning results into process improvements.
  • Confident use of Python for experiment control, automation, and data analysis.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills, comfortable in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team. The working language is English.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with widefield NV magnetometry or camera-based quantum imaging.
  • Familiarity with semiconductor failure analysis, inspection, or metrology.
  • Hands-on experience with CVD diamond growth, irradiation and annealing, or thin-film optical coatings.

Our benefits

  • Mission:
At QD, we’re driven by more than just building great products - we aim to make a lasting difference. Joining us means contributing to meaningful work that goes beyond business as usual.
  • Impact & growth:
This is an exciting stage of our journey, and your voice matters. You’ll have the chance to shape our culture, influence key decisions, and grow alongside a company that’s scaling fast.
  • Health & fitness:

Bending Spoons

Remoteparttimejunior

Apply on the employer's site

Role description

At Bending Spoons, we’re striving to build one of the all-time great companies. A company that serves a huge number of customers. A company where team members grow to their full potential. A company that functions at unparalleled levels of effectiveness and efficiency. A company that creates value for shareowners at an extraordinary rate. And a company that does so while adhering to high ethical standards.

In pursuit of this objective, we acquire and improve digital businesses, not to sell on, but to own and operate for the long term. The transformations we make are often deep—designed to speed up innovation, benefit customers, and strengthen business performance. Here, hierarchy is minimal and teams are small and talent-dense. We operate established products with the ambition, agility, and urgency of a startup. Across the company, we integrate AI deeply into how we work so that human judgment and machine intelligence reinforce each other.

For a talented, driven, and collaborative individual, working at Bending Spoons is an opportunity to learn, make an impact, and progress their career at an exceptionally high rate. That’s our promise to such a candidate.

A few examples of your responsibilities

  • Build AI-powered product experiences.
Work with product teams to identify high-impact opportunities where AI can transform the user experience for millions—and then build these transformative solutions. Drive the process from possibility to production, delivering code that’s robust, reproducible, and built for scale.
  • Amplify your impact with AI.
Integrate the most powerful AI tools directly into your development workflow—design, implementation, testing, and documentation—to move faster while maintaining high standards for correctness, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Master your toolkit.
Work across diverse stacks with end-to-end ownership, choosing the right technologies for each challenge. From monoliths to microservices, gRPC to REST, Kubernetes to Docker, Python to Rust—you’ll apply technologies thoughtfully, focusing on depth and purpose rather than trends.
  • Build software that matters.
Take real ownership from idea to production, creating systems used by millions and evolving them into products at scale.
  • Simplify relentlessly.
Question every layer of complexity. Improve architectures, pipelines, and codebases to build systems that are simpler, more scalable, and easier to maintain.

What we look for

  • Reasoning ability.
Given the necessary knowledge, you can solve complex problems. You think from first principles, and structure your ideas sharply. You resist the influence of biases. You identify and take care of the details that matter.
  • Drive.
You’re extremely ambitious in everything you do—and your initiative, effort, and tenacity match the intensity of your ambition. You feel deeply responsible for your work. You hold yourself to a high—and rising—bar.
  • Team spirit.
You give generously and without the expectation of receiving in return. You support the best idea, not your idea. You're always happy to get your hands dirty to help your team. You’re reliable, honest, and transparent.
  • Proficiency in English.
You read, write, and speak proficiently in English.

What we offer

  • Incredibly talented, entrepreneurial teams.
You’ll work in small, result-oriented, autonomous teams alongside some of the brightest people in your field.
  • An exceptional opportunity for growth.
We go to great lengths to hire individuals of outstanding potential—then, our priority is to put them in the ideal position to thrive. Spooners in their 20s lead products worth hundreds of millions of dollars. And if you’ve got what it takes, you’ll soon be playing an essential role in major projects, too.
  • All. These. Benefits.
Flexible hours, remote working, unlimited backing for learning and training, top-of-the-market health insurance, a rich relocation package, generous parental support, and a yearly retreat to a stunning location. We help each Spooner set up the conditions to do their best work.
  • A flexible start date and part-time options.
You don't need to wait until graduation to apply. We offer flexible start dates and the possibility to begin part-time, transitioning to full-time as you complete your degree. Many Spooners joined before graduating and progressively took on greater responsibility, with arrangements that allowed them to do so without compromising their education.
  • Competitive pay and access to company equity at a discount.
Typical annual salary offers range from £85,797 to £151,436 in London and from €66,065 to €107,837 elsewhere in Europe. The lower end of these ranges applies to candidates with little or no relevant experience, while exceptionally experienced candidates may receive offers of up to £316,052 in London or €240,330 elsewhere in Europe. Candidates offered a permanent contract may choose to receive part of their compensation in discounted company equity.

Commitment & contract
Permanent or fixed-term. Full-time.

Location
Milan (Italy), London (UK), Madrid (Spain), Warsaw (Poland), or fully remote from eligible countries.

The selection process
In our screening process, we prioritize verifiable signals of excellence, regardless of seniority. There are no preferential paths beyond what your application demonstrates, and we evaluate every candidate through the same process.

Some people hold back because they feel they lack experience or have an “imperfect” CV. If you like the role and believe you could excel over time, don’t self-reject.

All applications go through our careers page, which is the only way to be considered. If you pass our screening, you’ll be asked to complete one or more tests. They are challenging, may involve unfamiliar problems, and can take several hours. To learn more about what to expect throughout the selection process, you can find additional information here.

We set the bar high and won’t extend an offer until we’re confident we’ve found the right candidate. This is why a job may remain open for months or be reposted several times.

We consider all applicants for employment and provide reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities—please let us know through this form.

Before you apply
If you’ve applied before but didn't receive an offer, we recommend waiting at least one year before applying again.

Bending Spoons is a demanding environment. We’re extremely ambitious and we hold ourselves—and one another—to a high standard. While this tends to lead to extraordinary learning, achievement, and career growth, it also requires significant commitment.

To help you ramp up quickly and set yourself up for success, we expect you to spend most days in our Milan office during your first few months with us, regardless of your long-term work location. It’s the best way to rapidly absorb our company culture and build trust with your new teammates. We’ll support you with generous travel and accommodation assistance. After that, you’re welcome to work from one of our offices, or remotely from approved countries—depending on what we agree at the offer stage.

If the role speaks to you and you’re excited to give your best, we’d love to hear from you. Apply now—we can’t wait to meet you.
