About the role

Most teams use AI as a faster way for humans to build products. At Deel, we want to go further: build the system that lets AI build the products, with humans defining the taste, the guardrails, and the standards it works within.

That system is your product. You design and build the substrate AI generates against: the design system and component architecture, the generation and agent workflows, the quality gates that keep AI output production-ready, and the feedback loops that keep everything visible to the team. You stay hands-on as a designer throughout, because the fastest way to prove a generation system works is to design and ship real interfaces on top of it.

This is a senior individual contributor role. It is systems-first and craft-backed: you build the machine, and you use your own design ability to pressure-test it. You spend your time in Figma and in a code editor in roughly equal measure, you partner directly with design leadership to drive AI adoption across the whole design organisation, and you work as part of a cross-functional team alongside Engineering and Product rather than in isolation.

What you will do

  • Build the system that lets AI build products -
Architect the design system, tokens, and components as the substrate AI generates against. Design prompt libraries, patterns, and agent workflows that turn design intent into production-ready UI with minimal human assembly.
  • Design hands-on to prove it -
Stay a practicing designer. Explore concepts quickly, design real interfaces, and prototype in production front-end code so you are the first and toughest test of whether the system produces excellent, shippable work.
  • Own quality, guardrails, and evals -
Define production-readiness criteria for AI-generated UI, design-to-code fidelity benchmarks, regression safeguards, and evaluation methods that keep AI output honest. Acceleration cannot come at the cost of craft.
  • Drive the AI workflow across the design org -
Partner directly with design leadership to maintain, evolve, and roll out the AI-native workflow across the whole design organisation, not just your own work. This is a shared, ongoing responsibility, not a one-off setup: driving adoption, keeping standards current as tools change, and embedding the workflow across teams so it never depends on one person.
  • Work cross-functionally -
Collaborate closely with Engineering, Product, and design-system contributors. You complement engineering rather than replacing it, and you keep the system round-tripping to shared surfaces such as Figma so AI-accelerated output stays visible and open to feedback, never a black box.
  • Push into generative UI
    - Take AI beyond the build process and into the product itself. Prototype and evaluate adaptive, AI-generated interfaces as a product capability, and help shape where they belong on the roadmap.
  • Level up the team -
Turn what works into playbooks, prompt libraries, and enablement so the wider design org builds on the system rather than depending on you. The goal is durable capability, not tool dependency.

What we are looking for

The heart of this role
- You move fluidly between design and code. You don't need to be the deepest specialist in either discipline—what matters is you can design something well, build it yourself, and use AI to move quickly between the two.

  • Design
    - Real taste for layout, typography, interaction, motion; you care about polish
  • Code & prototype
    - Comfortable writing TypeScript/React (HTML, CSS, animation included). Prototype fast, moving between Figma and code to get from idea to working interface in hours rather than days
  • Systems thinking
    - Built or extended design systems others rely on
  • AI-native
using AI design and coding tools in real work and keen to help shape new ones.
  • Seniority
    - 7+ years in product design + front-end engineering in complex products; comfortable with ambiguity and setting standards others follow

Role description

At Bending Spoons, we’re striving to build one of the all-time great companies. A company that serves a huge number of customers. A company where team members grow to their full potential. A company that functions at unparalleled levels of effectiveness and efficiency. A company that creates value for shareowners at an extraordinary rate. And a company that does so while adhering to high ethical standards.

In pursuit of this objective, we acquire and improve digital businesses, not to sell on, but to own and operate for the long term. The transformations we make are often deep—designed to speed up innovation, benefit customers, and strengthen business performance. Here, hierarchy is minimal and teams are small and talent-dense. We operate established products with the ambition, agility, and urgency of a startup. Across the company, we integrate AI deeply into how we work so that human judgment and machine intelligence reinforce each other.

For a talented, driven, and collaborative individual, working at Bending Spoons is an opportunity to learn, make an impact, and progress their career at an exceptionally high rate. That’s our promise to such a candidate.

A few examples of your responsibilities

  • Build software that matters.
Take real ownership from idea to production, creating systems used by millions and evolving them into products at scale.
  • Amplify your impact with AI.
Integrate the most powerful AI tools directly into your development workflow—design, implementation, testing, and documentation—to move faster while maintaining high standards for correctness, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Master your toolkit.
Work across diverse stacks with end-to-end ownership, choosing the right technologies for each challenge. From monoliths to microservices, gRPC to REST, Kubernetes to Docker, Python to Rust—you’ll apply technologies thoughtfully, focusing on depth and purpose rather than trends.
  • Simplify relentlessly.
Question every layer of complexity. Improve architectures, pipelines, and codebases to build systems that are simpler, more scalable, and easier to maintain.

What we look for

  • Reasoning ability.
Given the necessary knowledge, you can solve complex problems. You think from first principles, and structure your ideas sharply. You resist the influence of biases. You identify and take care of the details that matter.
  • Drive.
You’re extremely ambitious in everything you do—and your initiative, effort, and tenacity match the intensity of your ambition. You feel deeply responsible for your work. You hold yourself to a high—and rising—bar.
  • Team spirit.

  • Proficiency in English.
You read, write, and speak proficiently in English.

What we offer

  • Incredibly talented, entrepreneurial teams.
You’ll work in small, result-oriented, autonomous teams alongside some of the brightest people in your field.
  • An exceptional opportunity for growth.
We go to great lengths to hire individuals of outstanding potential—then, our priority is to put them in the ideal position to thrive. Spooners in their 20s lead products worth hundreds of millions of dollars. And if you’ve got what it takes, you’ll soon be playing an essential role in major projects, too.
  • All. These. Benefits.

Many Spooners joined before graduating and progressively took on greater responsibility, with arrangements that allowed them to do so without compromising their education.
  • Competitive pay and access to company equity at a discount.
Typical annual salary offers range from £85,797 to £151,436 in London and from €66,065 to €107,837 elsewhere in Europe. The selection process
In our screening process, we prioritize verifiable signals of excellence, regardless of seniority. There are no preferential paths beyond what your application demonstrates, and we evaluate every candidate through the same process.

Some people hold back because they feel they lack experience or have an “imperfect” CV. If you like the role and believe you could excel over time, don’t self-reject.

All applications go through our careers page, which is the only way to be considered. If you pass our screening, you’ll be asked to complete one or more tests. They are challenging, may involve unfamiliar problems, and can take several hours. To learn more about what to expect throughout the selection process, you can find additional information here.

We set the bar high and won’t extend an offer until we’re confident we’ve found the right candidate. This is why a job may remain open for months or be reposted several times.

We consider all applicants for employment and provide reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities—please let us know through this form.

Before you apply
If you’ve applied before but didn't receive an offer, we recommend waiting at least one year before applying again.

Bending Spoons is a demanding environment. We’re extremely ambitious and we hold ourselves—and one another—to a high standard. While this tends to lead to extraordinary learning, achievement, and career growth, it also requires significant commitment.

To help you ramp up quickly and set yourself up for success, we expect you to spend most days in our Milan office during your first few months with us, regardless of your long-term work location. It’s the best way to rapidly absorb our company culture and build trust with your new teammates. We’ll support you with generous travel and accommodation assistance.
