Role description

We help the world run better
At SAP, we keep it simple: you bring your best to us, and we'll bring out the best in you. We're builders touching over 20 industries and 80% of global commerce, and we need your unique talents to help shape what's next. The work is challenging – but it matters. You'll find a place where you can be yourself, prioritize your wellbeing, and truly belong. What's in it for you? Constant learning, skill growth, great benefits, and a team that wants you to grow and succeed.

What You'll Build
As a Senior Cloud-Native Engineer (f/m/d), you will build and scale the critical backend infrastructure for the SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP). Your work will directly impact how thousands of developers and global businesses create and run their applications. In this role, you’ll transform our cloud capabilities by taking ownership of services that are essential to SAP's strategy.

  • Build and operate the highly-available, scalable microservices that form the backbone of the SAP Business Technology Platform.
  • Architect and implement the central API gateway, handling massive-scale traffic, security policies, and observability for all of SAP's cloud products.
  • Enhance our core Kubernetes infrastructure to provide a fast, reliable, and seamless deployment experience for developers using the SAP Business Application Studio.
  • Take full ownership of the services you build, adopting a "you build it, you run it" philosophy. This includes everything from initial code to deployment and participating in on-call rotations to guarantee 24/7 service reliability for our customers.
  • Elevate the team's technical capabilities by mentoring other engineers, driving architectural decisions, and establishing best practices.

What You Bring

  • Degree in Computer Science or a related field, with 5+ years of professional experience in backend or platform engineering.
  • Expertise in an object-oriented language like Go (Golang), C++, Java, or Node.js. Go is preferred.
  • In-depth, hands-on experience with cloud-native paradigms, including container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Proven experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using tools like Jenkins, or similar.
  • Proficiency with monitoring and observability tools for distributed systems such as Elastic Stack, Prometheus, Grafana, or Dynatrace.
  • Experience deploying and managing applications on cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Fluent English language skills, with strong written and verbal communication skills.

Beneficial

  • Experience in computer networking concepts, and specifically with a massive scale of network traffic.

Where you belong
You will join our skilled engineering team located in Berlin and Israel.

Our team fosters a highly collaborative and agile culture built on pair programming, test-driven development (TDD), and continuous delivery. This is a workplace where you will own services critical to SAP's success, work with cutting-edge open-source technologies, and grow your career alongside a supportive team of cloud experts. We are committed to your development and provide opportunities for mentorship, learning, and career progression.

DevOps Engineer

Development Expert (f/m/d) for ApeiroRA

SAP

Berlin

Apply on the employer's site

Role description

We help the world run better
At SAP, we keep it simple: you bring your best to us, and we'll bring out the best in you. We're builders touching over 20 industries and 80% of global commerce, and we need your unique talents to help shape what's next. The work is challenging – but it matters. You'll find a place where you can be yourself, prioritize your wellbeing, and truly belong. What's in it for you? Constant learning, skill growth, great benefits, and a team that wants you to grow and succeed.

What You'll Do
Build Europe's sovereign cloud infrastructure through open source at SAP, with a focus on network automation. You'll contribute to the ApeiroRA Reference Architecture within the EU's IPCEI-CIS initiative, developing Kubernetes operators and controllers that automate network provisioning and orchestration across European cloud providers.

Your work involves building systems that bridge cloud-native platforms with physical and virtual network infrastructure. You'll automate network configuration, lifecycle management, and integration across multiple environments using technologies like Kubernetes operators, Go, and modern network APIs—solving problems that eliminate vendor lock-in and enable seamless workload portability.

Working within the Linux Foundation's NeoNephos ecosystem, you'll collaborate with engineers from major European tech companies and contribute to widely-adopted open source projects. At SAP, you'll grow your expertise in cloud-native technologies and network automation while building infrastructure that ensures European organizations control their digital destiny.

Working on systems that serve SAP's global customer base, you'll establish architectural patterns and design standards that enable organizations to run mission-critical applications with enterprise-grade performance and reliability. Your architectural decisions will shape how European organizations build and deploy cloud infrastructure, directly supporting their ability to maintain data sovereignty while accessing world-class cloud capabilities.

You will contribute to building a sovereign, privacy-first AI cloud for the European market that makes it easy to securely train, fine-tune, and deploy foundation and domain models with strict data residency and isolation.

What You Bring

  • Expert Programming: Deep expertise in Go, Rust, Python with focus on distributed systems and cloud-native architecture
  • Cloud & Infrastructure Knowledge: Advanced knowledge of OpenStack, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS, Azure, GCP with experience in microservices and event-driven architecture, along with infrastructure automation concepts
  • Technical Curiosity: Interest in networking (protocols, configuration management, APIs) or experience with network devices, with willingness to deepen expertise
  • Technical Leadership: 8+ years of software development with proven track record of leading architectural decisions across multiple teams
  • Open Source Impact: Significant contributions to widely-adopted projects, preferably as maintainer in CNCF or Linux Foundation ecosystems
  • Scale & Performance: Experience building systems that handle massive traffic, multi-region deployments, and complex distributed consensus patterns
  • Innovation Drive: Demonstrated ability to pioneer solutions for vendor lock-in elimination and advance European cloud sovereignty initiatives
  • Security and Compliance: Awareness of industry standards related to security and compliance and experience integrating regulatory requirements into architectural patterns
  • Cultural Adaptability: Experience working across cultures and languages with strong communication skills for diverse, distributed teams
  • Soft skills: Excellent presentation, communication and problem-solving skills, have a thorough way of working with accuracy, take proactive initiatives, self-dependent and structured mode of working, high level of commitment and reliability, ready to work in a constantly changing, floating environment, fun working in a multinational team

Depending on project assignment, candidates may need to be eligible for security clearance under German law.
