We are seeking a skilled
Senior Data Engineer
with expertise in Scala, Spark and Databricks to join our team. In this role, you will lead the design, implementation and optimization of data pipelines, ensuring scalable and efficient data processing. Your work will enable the aggregation of commerce purchase and catalog data into a centralized data lake while contributing to innovative future projects.

Please note that for positions in Ukraine, we only consider candidates who are currently based in Ukraine or plan to return in the near future. Remote work is available only from Ukraine.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain code bases for ETL and ELT pipelines, large batch/micro-batch processing and streaming systems
  • Build infrastructure for optimal extraction, transformation and loading of data using Spark, ADF or similar technologies
  • Identify and implement internal process improvements, including automation, data optimizations and infrastructure redesign for scalability
  • Design and implement data services solutions leveraging technologies such as Spring Boot, ReactJS or NoSQL
  • Ensure governance of processes in delivery management and production adhering to the selected delivery model
  • Serve as a single point of accountability for delivery-related matters, including escalations, upsells and ramp-downs
  • Lead technical delivery to ensure sound architecture and compliance with quality standards
  • Define and document stories with associated acceptance criteria for agile workflows
  • Coordinate with stakeholders and teams across various disciplines to ensure seamless project execution
  • Deliver projects following customer processes, methodologies and agile approaches
  • Establish continuous delivery risk management strategies for proactive decision-making across the lifecycle
  • Enhance delivery productivity through measurement and process improvements
  • Provide expert consulting and guidance to Data Engineers to ensure quality deliverables
  • Manage production support and deployment activities

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of working experience in data engineering roles
  • Proficiency in Scala, Spark and Databricks
  • Expertise in SQL, including writing and optimizing complex queries
  • Familiarity with Spark Streaming and Apache Kafka
  • Background in designing data pipelines using Databricks or similar tools
  • Strong soft skills with excellent English proficiency (B2+) for direct client communication

Nice to have

  • Skills in Apache Kafka, Apache Kafka Streams, PySpark and Spark Streaming
  • Understanding of Python and its use in data engineering contexts
  • Knowledge of Azure cloud platforms for data solutions

Role description

We are looking for a Data Engineer to join the Platform Engineering team. The team is responsible for supporting, operating, and evolving the data platform used by engineering and data science teams.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with engineers across the team to support and improve data platform operations.
  • Work closely with Data Scientists to provide technical support and ensure smooth day-to-day platform usage.
  • Establish and improve processes related to platform stability, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Support Spark infrastructure and ensure efficient execution of large-scale data processing jobs.
  • Contribute to observability, monitoring, alerting, and on-call processes.
  • Help maintain data platform components across Kubernetes, Airflow, Trino/Presto, and related infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Strong experience with CI/CD pipelines.

  • Background in distributed systems.
  • Experience with Kubernetes resource management.
  • Understanding of authentication, data governance, and platform security concepts.
  • Familiarity with file compaction and maintenance on HDFS and/or object stores.
  • Solid understanding of data engineering fundamentals, including partitioning, schema design, type safety, and table formats such as Iceberg and Hive.
  • Experience with observability and monitoring tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, and alerting systems.
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team.

As a Senior II Backend Engineer,
you'll drive technical direction across multiple squads, lead high-impact initiatives, and build the systems that power Preply's global growth engine. Your work will influence how we scale our platform, align teams around shared outcomes, and help millions of learners connect with tutors worldwide.

Python is our primary language, but prior experience with it isn't mandatory. We take a tech-agnostic approach and welcome engineers from various backgrounds, such as Java, Node.js, Ruby, Scala, .NET, PHP, or Go. What we truly look for is an eagerness to learn the language and the adaptability to hit the ground running with product development.
What You’ll Be Doing

  • Own, shape, and drive technical direction across multiple engineering squads.
  • Lead complex, ambiguous initiatives from idea to delivery, aligning engineers, teams, product managers, and stakeholders around shared outcomes.
  • Design, build, and evolve scalable backend systems using Python/Django, data pipelines, and third-party integrations that support long-term business growth.
  • Partner with PMs, EMs, and senior stakeholders to shape roadmaps, make technical trade-offs, and guide investment decisions.
  • Raise the engineering bar through mentoring, architectural reviews, and engineering best practices.
  • Drive reliability, observability, performance, and operational excellence across multiple services and teams.
  • Foster a quality-first culture through automation, documentation, and continuous improvement.
  • Participate in on-call rotation (1 week every 5 weeks).

What You Need To Succeed

  • Exposure to architectural patterns of a large, high-scale web application (e.g., well-designed APIs, high-volume data pipelines, efficient algorithms);
  • Proven experience leading complex, greenfield projects end-to-end
  • A track record of shaping architectural decisions and setting engineering standards that impact multiple teams or domains.
  • Comfort with shaping product scope, challenging requirements, and focusing on customer value.
  • Strong communication (English level B2+) with the ability to influence senior peers and leadership through clear reasoning and strong technical judgment.
  • Willingness to join your team's on-call rotation (1 week out of every 5).

About The Job
The Information Management team is focused on developing information management systems based on the ESRI ArcGIS Online platform, with a planned migration to ArcGIS Enterprise. The team works with various applications within the ArcGIS ecosystem, including Survey123, Field Maps, Dashboards, and Experience Builder. The successful candidate will join the Information Management team and contribute to the development, configuration, and enhancement of different components of the information management systems within the ArcGIS environment. The role also involves supporting the integration and maintenance of these systems to ensure their effective operation.

Your main duties and responsibilities will be:

  • Development of effective data collection tools and methodologies, as well as the design and management of database systems for data management and analysis.
  • Maintenance and administration of the DRC beneficiary database.
  • Implementation of functional features and user interfaces, such as dashboards and databases.
  • Collaborate with other departments to improve the product on their feedback.
  • Support Team Leaders in technical application of the database in instances where the data entry is undertaken by programme staff.
  • Support programme colleagues in case of any technical difficulties or questions regarding the database and IM in general; provide trainings for colleagues on how to use the database.
  • Ensure information regarding beneficiaries is consolidated into one database and is up-to-date; identify missing data and follow up with Team Leaders.
  • Support in providing beneficiary lists and data for monitoring activities, including PDM and evaluation reports.
  • Apply data program techniques and procedures.
  • In line with DRC’s Information Management SoPs, keep all data protected and confidential.

About You
To be successful in this role we expect you to have

  • Knowledge of Survey123, or other data collection applications.
  • Advanced level of English language proficiency; Fluency in Ukrainian.
