📋 Your role as a (Senior) Engineering Manager

As an Engineering Manager, you’ll help to elevate your team's technical standards by championing sustainable development, prioritising operational excellence, and fostering a quality-first mindset. You’ll strike a balance between ambitious technical goals and pragmatic delivery, ensuring that reliability, security, and long-term scalability are integral, not secondary.

The Engineering Manager shall ensure that the team's purpose and accountability are tightly integrated with the organisation's strategic objectives, creating an environment where engineers can dedicate their focus to high-value work, consistently shipping value early and often.

Your Responsibilities Will Include

  • Delivery: Own outcomes and help the team deliver what matters.

Your First 6–12 Months
0-3 Months

  • Form the team and build relationships.
  • Define the mission, vision and roadmap with the trio.
  • Set up the team for successful delivery.
  • Establish the team's ways of working.

3-6 Months

  • Deliver the first building blocks of the global accounting kernel.
  • Establish a sustainable delivery rhythm.
  • Move towards AI-native engineering practices.

  • Continue delivering and evolving the accounting kernel to 9+ europeen countries.
  • Build a strong, high-performing team.
  • Further embed AI-native engineering practices.

Senior EM Focus Only

🔎 About you

You're an experienced Engineering Manager who combines
strong delivery, people leadership and technical capability
. You're comfortable with ambiguity, change and making decisions without having all the answers.

Must-Have Experience

  • 2+ years Engineering Management experience, ideally with experience in a second EM role.
  • Strong technical background and ability to challenge technical decisions.
  • Full SDLC and DevOps experience: testing, observability, incident response readiness, and security/privacy/data compliance ownership - "you build it, you run it."
  • Strong and production-proven opinions on architecture, design, testing and cloud (AWS preferred).
  • Strong Delivery Management experience: you own the roadmap, steer timeline conversations on metrics, drive forecasting, balance feature work against technical improvements, operations and maintenance.
  • Strong People Leadership experience: run structured 1:1s, manage the career development, have direct performance conversations, establish an inclusive environment with high psychological safety.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and change.
  • Strong Agile mindset, with experience in Kanban or similar.
  • Customer-focused and able to connect technical work to customer problems.
  • Active engagement with AI beyond experimentation - you have proven experience in using AI inside of software engineering/R&D. Youcan critically evaluate their impact
  • Discovery experience working with Product and Design.

Specific programming language experience such as TypeScript, React or Node.js is not mandatory.

About The Role
Camunda is going through the AI-First transformation, and we are looking for a
Senior Software Engineer
to join our
Engineering Operations Team
. As part of this high-impact platform team, you will play a key role in fostering engineering excellence by creating, implementing and maintaining scalable core processes to enhance development efficiency, reliability, and quality within the Camunda 8 code bases, as well as the Engineering-wide organization processes.

As Camunda 8 evolves into the leader of the agentic orchestration market, your mission is to ensure our internal development lifecycle is just as autonomous and gets us there in a frictionless manner. You will work with infrastructure and core software engineering teams to ensure smooth workflows, robust dependency management, and continuous improvement of CI processes in the era of AI-first development; enabling the Camunda 8 engineering teams to focus better on the core product development.

What You'll Be Doing

  • AI-Augmented Engineering: Lead the shift toward an automated engineering lifecycle by implementing and orchestrating unified processes in the Camunda 8 repos - including AI-assisted processes like release management, autonomous dependency updates, and proactive CVE remediation.
  • Continuously optimize CI/release health and development velocity using a metric-driven approach to identify and eliminate bottlenecks in our AI-first workflows
  • Collaborate with the key stakeholders to implement the CI strategy and engineering best practices, by creating a positive impact within the Engineering organization.
  • Identify friction points in engineering workflows and evolve them into automated, self-sustaining systems that can handle the increased volume of an AI-augmented workforce - by effectively partnering with software engineers, engineering leaders and cross-team stakeholders

What You Bring
Must Haves:

  • Strong Software Engineering experience with a track record of delivering results (preferably, in Java)
  • Specialization: Fullstack or Backend
  • Passion for engineering operational excellence beyond writing code, including CI/CD optimization, dependency management, release process enhancements, metrics collection, and build efficiency (DevOps mindset), and track record of owning and developing engineering processes end-to-end
  • Strong experience in CI build tools (GitHub Actions, Java ecosystem - Maven, Docker) and automations (Shell/Python) in complex projects (e.g. monorepositories)
  • Being a strong collaborator across teams and delivering impactful solutions in a platform-like environment.
  • Experience in developer experience tools and process optimization & driving AI adoption

You thrive in taking ownership of the codebase, as well as how you deploy and operate software. You are comfortable with the “you build it, you run it” mindset

The role focuses on
onboarding new data sources and assets into Azure Data Explorer (ADX)
