Job Description

Turnitin is seeking a
Senior Backend Engineer
with a strong focus on backend development, particularly in Java and serverless architectures, combined with solid frontend experience. This role is ideal for engineers passionate about building scalable distributed systems, data modeling, and delivering high-performing, reliable software solutions for our award-winning educational platform.

As a core contributor to our shared services team, you will play a key role in developing and enhancing the foundational systems that power both existing and new applications.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and optimize scalable shared backend services using Java and serverless technologies (AWS Lambda).
  • Design / implement RESTful APIs and event-driven systems.
  • Contribute to the development of user-facing frontend components as needed.
  • Optimize existing services for improved performance and cost-efficiency.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including Architects, Product Managers, and other engineering leads, to deliver innovative solutions.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior developers, fostering growth and sharing best practices.
  • Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines.
  • Ensure high-quality code through peer reviews, automated testing, and adherence to software development standards.
  • Create comprehensive documentation for the developed shared components, including usage guidelines and examples.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications, Skills, and Knowledge/Experience:

  • 8+ years of expertise in backend development, with proficiency in Java and experience with serverless frameworks (e.g., AWS Lambda, Google Cloud Functions).
  • Hands-on experience with frontend technologies (e.g., React, Web Components).
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, scalability, and data modeling.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and collaborate with stakeholders across various locations, including distributed teams based in Europe and the USA, to deliver impactful solutions.
  • Practical experience in cloud technologies and frameworks, specifically developing serverless applications on AWS using technologies such as lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway and SNS/SQS/EventBridge.
  • Extensive experience with software development best practices (e.g. design patterns, test-driven development, code profiling, debugging).
  • Experience with CI/CD tools, including build, deployment and test automation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues in agile environments.
  • A passion for mentoring and developing the skills of junior engineers.

What is this role all about?
As a Mid or Senior Software Engineer at Infobip, you will be part of our Engineering Powerhouse, working on an in-house developed product that operates at a global scale. You will contribute to a large, scalable microservices architecture that delivers over 500 million messages daily and supports our clients’ business growth.

This role is focused on our RCS (Rich Communication Services) platform, which powers rich, interactive business messaging that goes far beyond traditional channels. You will help deliver branded, app-like customer experiences routed through carriers worldwide. We’re talking about systems with high uptime, high throughput, and low latency.

When you join us, you will work with Java, Kotlin, and React. If you have a strong foundation in object-oriented programming, we still encourage you to apply, even if you have not worked with this exact tech stack before.
What You’ll Do

  • Develop, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot team-owned services on Infobip’s platform
  • Take full ownership of the code you produce, from development to production

As a Senior Back End Engineer, become a part of a cross-functional development team engineering experiences of tomorrow.   • Strong, hands-on expertise with TypeScript and Node.js
  • Deep understanding of API security principles and best practices (e.g., OWASP Top 10, rate limiting, input validation)
  • Demonstrable experience with AWS services such as API Gateway, Lambda, ECS, SQS, SNS, and DynamoDB
  • Proficient with CI/CD practices and tools (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions)
  • Hands-on experience with containerization using Docker and an understanding of orchestration (e.g., ECS, Kubernetes)

Senior Backend Engineer
to help us build an internal AI agent platform.

You’ll be joining a very early-stage initiative to build an internal platform for an AI agent ecosystem.
