Cantor Fitzgerald is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer Virtualization Specialist to join EWS-Global, the team responsible for enterprise Windows server infrastructure, virtualisation, and the Microsoft 365 platform across a major global financial services organisation. The role sits at the centre of the firm's active virtualisation modernisation programme.
The successful candidate will operate as a senior technical individual contributor and decision maker with a product management mindset responsible for architecture, design and engineering within a global distributed team, taking direct ownership of a large hypervisor refresh project that supports a SOX-governed, multi-entity, multi-datacentre environment. They will be expected to bring deep product knowledge and the independent judgement needed to manage both day-to-day operational requests and longer-horizon infrastructure and platform projects.
Key Responsibilities
Virtualization
- Execution of large-scale hypervisor refresh project at all layers including architecture, design, cluster builds and vm migrations
- Management of private cloud virtual estate across multiple datacentres with future work to plan and execute scaling from on premise private cloud to public cloud providers
- Management of hosted Kubernetes solution
- Management of virtualization native automation and self-service solutions
- Capacity management and performance engineering across both HCI, 3-tier and cloud deployments
- Customer centric product management mindset of the virtualization offering
- FinOps and reporting for virtualization platform
- Hypervisor configuration to maintain security baselines such as CIS
- Automation and process improvement/Bau runbooks
- Hardware configuration and sizing (Dell/HP/Supermicro)
- Strategic input to team lead and head of infrastructure
- Creation and input into team roadmap
- Evaluation of new/improved functionality
- Train and mentor junior engineers
- Liase and work with multiple internal and external stakeholders
- Continuous improvement
Infrastructure & Server Operations
- Work as part of a larger team across many technologies outside of core virtualisation area (Active Directory, M365, Windows Server)
- Windows server management and operations
- Ownership of complex cross-team infrastructure requests and incidents
- Automation and service improvement across the team stack
Required Skills & Experience
Essential
- 5+ years in enterprise systems engineering, with deep hands-on virtualization experience (Nutanix, VMware, Hyper-V) in a large-scale production environment
- Experience with private cloud solutions from Nutanix or Vmware (Nutanix Cloud Manager or VCF and Aria suite)
- Experience of the above in environments of above 100 hosts/1000 vms in size
- Proven experience planning, executing and being a key decision maker in large hypervisor migrations
- Strong grasp of VM capacity/performance analysis — including right-sizing memory and CPU allocations based on utilisation data
- Storage and SAN fundamentals to support 3-tier deployments
- Experience of HCI deployments including management and sizing/capacity planning
- Powershell/scripting to include reporting and automation tasks
- Experience operating in a regulated, multi-entity environment with formal change management (e.g., SOX controls, ITSM/change tooling such as Provance, ServiceNow, or similar)
- Ability to work independently on complex technical problems with strong written and verbal communication
- Enthusiastic adopter of AI tooling and automation, with a willingness to explore how emerging AI capabilities can improve operational efficiency, reduce toil, and enhance the quality of engineering outputs across the team by contributing ideas for applying AI to infrastructure
Highly Desirable
- Experience with Kubernetes on hypervisors (Nutanix Kubernetes Services, Tanzu, etc)
- Experience of expanding on-premise virtualization to public cloud
- Experience with charge back/showback for virtual offerings to internal customers
- Experience with micro segmentation and virtual networking products (Nutanix Flow or NSX)
- Exposure to Windows Server administration, Active Directory and M365 in a multi-forest/hybrid environment (this team also owns Windows, AD, and M365 infrastructure)
- Automation experience with Ansible for infrastructure provisioning and or Power automate
