WordPress Developer — Remote Contractor
STRATUSstaff is recruiting
experienced WordPress developers who can take ownership of real development work.
We're not looking for someone whose WordPress experience stops at installing Elementor, changing a template, and adding content.
We need people who can be handed an objective, inspect an existing site, understand the problem, research what they don't know, and deliver a working solution.
The work
Depending on the project, you'll work across:
• Custom WordPress development
• Themes and child themes
• Plugin development and customization
• PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
• Gutenberg and custom blocks
• WooCommerce
• ACF and custom content structures
• Forms and business workflows
• REST APIs, webhooks, and third-party integrations
• Existing-site debugging and repair
• Performance and responsive issues
• Migrations and deployments
• Technical documentation
We need developers who can think
Knowing WordPress is only part of the job.
We're looking for people who can:
Understand the objective.
Investigate the problem.
Read the documentation.
Make a sensible decision.
Build and test the solution.
Communicate what they did.
If you're blocked, communicate.
If you don't know something, research it.
If you take ownership of something, finish it.
Our environment isn't for everyone
STRATUSstaff is a distributed, process-driven organization working through small remote PODS.
We use Basecamp heavily. Written communication and documentation matter. We expect people to read instructions instead of requiring them to be repeatedly explained.
Our current philosophy is:
Hire Slow. Fire Fast. Promote Even Faster.
We don't expect perfection.
We
do
expect competence, communication, ownership, and visible progress.
People who demonstrate those things can take on greater responsibility quickly.
Our onboarding is also a test
Candidates who progress are asked to read the
STRATUSstaff Handbook
and complete a written onboarding process before joining our working environment.
Part of that process involves creating a dedicated STRATUSstaff work email account and following several straightforward written instructions.
We intentionally don't walk candidates through every step.
Being able to read instructions and execute them independently is part of demonstrating that you're suited to remote work here.
What we're looking for
• Proven WordPress development experience
• PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
• Theme and plugin experience
• Strong debugging ability
• Experience with APIs/integrations is highly valuable
• Clear written English
• Independent research ability
• Reliable communication
• Good technical judgment
• Ownership of finished results

Availability:
Part-time to full-time depending on capability and available work
If you're looking for an environment where strong performance can lead to
more complex work, greater technical ownership, POD leadership, and additional performance-based opportunities
, we'd like to hear from you.
